Review:
Westerns has never been my favourite genre because most of the time they feel really slow so the performances have to be top notch. And they certainly are. Russel Crowe is the best he's ever been - disregarding Gladiator of course. He plays outlaw, Ben Wade, with such a terrifying arrogance and swagger that instantly drew me in to the movie. But at the same time he's charismatic, charming and cunning which makes him such a divisive and conflicted figure. Christian Bale is one of my favourite actors so I'm always interested to watch whatever he appears in. In the role of simple rancher, Dan Evans, he makes a great adversary to Ben Wade as someone who's courageous and persistent. However, 3:10 to Yuma excels in the final moments as the two begin to become good friends. Watching them work together is satisfying and makes the emotional moments sting that little bit more.
The supporting cast are all on point as well. Logan Lerman is once again great providing a very humane performance and as previously mentioned in my review of The Perks of Being a Wallflower I believe he deserves and is talented enough to reach the very top. It's nice to see Alan Tudyk away from his famous CGI, voice acting robot performances in movies such as I, Robot and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
I'm a huge fan of director, James Mangold. I was first introduced to him in solid X-Men movie, The Wolverine and since then he's really kicked on and made two of the best movies of the past five years - Logan and Le Mans '66. He's also helming the upcoming Indiana Jones 5 which is currently being filmed in Glasgow. As 3:10 to Yuma is one of his earlier movies some of his stylistic shots and emotional beats aren't quite there but it's still a beautiful movie to look at.
Marco Beltrami has definitely elevated himself in recent months as one of the best composers in my opinion. His music has taken brilliant movies to another level and that's not really any different in 3:10 to Yuma. 'Main Title' and '3:10 to Yuma' feel very western, like they belong in this world but more importantly they're both beautiful pieces.
The climax of 3:10 to Yuma does not disappoint. The final shootout is thoroughly entertaining from interesting dilemmas, to the epic chase or the shocking scenes it's all completely riveting and compelling.
If you are a fan of Logan Lerman's work, you should definitely check out 'Fury.'
