One of the greatest strengths of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse is the animation. The style means the movie is the closest thing to a comic book. All the Spider people have different animation styles - Spider-Ham looks like something from Looney Tunes, Peni Parker looks like Anime, Spider-Noir is black and white and Miles looks like he was lifted straight out of a Marvel comic. The only thing I didn't like about the animation was the way Kingpin was portrayed - he was very wide. I don't mind the animators sticking to his comic book appearance, but really, he didn't have to be that huge!
There have been a lot of interpretations of Spider-Man on the big screen over recent years. I like that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse doesn't focus on Peter Parker. The main character is Miles Morales, an Afro-Latino teenager that lives in Brooklyn. Miles is part of Earth-1610 otherwise known as the Ultimate Universe - where Marvel rebooted all of their characters in a different universe. Miles was created in 2011 by Brian Michael Bendis after the death of Peter Parker in the Ultimate Universe. I like the fact the studio didn't offer up yet another reboot of the Peter Parker story, in an attempt to make some quick bucks. But instead decided to tell the story from Miles Morales' point of view, albeit still having Peter in the movie.
All the characters in this movie are strong - the characters were funny and interested me. Miles, Peter and Gwen's back and forth dialogue is hilarious; Spider-Noir and Spider-Ham have a certain quirkiness about them, that made me laugh at them and with them; and Prowler and Kingpin are incredible character studies for a PG rated movie. The only character I didn't really like was Peni Parker as I felt she was underdeveloped. For example, there is one supposed emotional scene involving her at the end of the movie but the audience only feels the emotion if they have read the back story in Marvel comics.
