UK Release Date: 26 January 2017 Certification: 15 Director: Mel Gibson  Cast: Luke Bracey, Andrew Garfield, Rachel Griffiths, Teresa Palmer, Vince Vaughn, Hugo Weaving, Sam Worthington Rating: 90% 'One of the greatest American heroes never fired a bullet' Review: Hacksaw Ridge , directed by Mel Gibson, is based on a true story depicting the life of Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield), a man who refuses to touch a gun despite volunteering to fight in the war. The movie was a huge success upon release earning $180 million worldwide and receiving six Oscar nominations including best picture.  The biggest takeaway from Hacksaw Ridge is that it cements Andrew Garfield as an extraordinary actor amongst some of the very best of this decade. I've loved absolutely everything he's been in. He's sensational and without doubt in my top five favourite actors of all time. The accent worked, his morals made sense and his performance was commanding and powerful. He s...

Captain America: The First Avenger

Image
UK Release Date:  29 July 2011 Certification:  12A Director:  Joe Johnston Cast:  Haley Atwell, Chris Evans, Tommy Lee Jones, Sebastian Stan, Stanley Tucci, Hugo Weaving Rating: 80 %   Captain America is and always will be my favourite superhero. Review: Based during World War II, Captain America: The First Avenger is the fifth venture into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie explores Steve Rogers, a skinny kid from Brooklyn, who becomes Captain America to help win the war.  The best thing going for the movie is it's hero, not Captain America but instead Steve Rogers. He was already a hero before he 'became' one, all Steve wants to do is stop bullies. His personality doesn't change even when his body does.  Chris Evans obviously plays a huge role in making the character feel grounded, getting even better as the MCU progresses. Cementing himself, alongside Robert Downey Jr (as Iron Man), as irreplaceable actors in their roles. Sebastian Stan's Buc...

Transformers

UK Release Date: 27 July 2007 Certification: 12A Director: Michael Bay Cast: Peter Cullen, Josh Duhamel, Kevin Dunn, Megan Fox, Shia LaBeouf, Mark Ryan, John Turturro, Hugo Weaving, Julie White Rating: 50 % I enjoy the Transformers ride at Universal Studios more than the movie. Review: I have to be honest I don't really enjoy the Transformers movies. Although I will credit the screenwriters who were able to create an entire franchise out of a range of Hasbro action toys and a 1980's animated TV show.  I do enjoy Shia LaBeouf as Sam Witwicky. His character is a socially awkward teenager - I can relate to that - and most of his humour is based on sarcasm, which also appeals to me. But I dislike the overdramatic screams of Bumblebee whenever Sam is in peril. It is not in keeping with a movie deprived of any drama.  Megan Fox doesn't work for me. Another pretty face that in my opinion is pretty weak when it comes to acting. The voice cast is ok. Peter Cullen an...
