Review:
Based during World War II, Captain America: The First Avenger is the fifth venture into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie explores Steve Rogers, a skinny kid from Brooklyn, who becomes Captain America to help win the war.
The best thing going for the movie is it's hero, not Captain America but instead Steve Rogers. He was already a hero before he 'became' one, all Steve wants to do is stop bullies. His personality doesn't change even when his body does. Chris Evans obviously plays a huge role in making the character feel grounded, getting even better as the MCU progresses. Cementing himself, alongside Robert Downey Jr (as Iron Man), as irreplaceable actors in their roles.
Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes brings a certain charisma and energy to the movie making him a fine inclusion in the MCU. Other additions in the movie - such as Haley Atwell, Tommy Lee Jones and Stanley Tucci - all provide their own comedic moments and suit the movie well.
Johann Schmidt otherwise known as Red Skull (played by Hugo Weaving) is another of Marvel's one and done villains. I quite enjoyed the character as a Hydra general but the movie lost me a bit when he becomes an egotistical maniac like he is in the comics, due to him losing all his interesting characteristics and becoming another generic villain.
The first hour of the movie is sublime and perhaps some of my favourite story telling in the MCU. Joe Johnston's creates an excellent world which Alan Silvestri's score compliments excellently, especially the title 'Captain America'. Captain America: The First Avenger is able to tell a great origin story whilst also setting up other ventures in the MCU. I do feel the the movie loses it's magic in the third act as it doesn't let emotional moments sting, moving on quite quickly.
All and all Captain America: The First Avenger is an interesting narrative that introduces us to an incredible character and kick starts my favourite trilogy of all time.
