UK Release Date:  20 June 2023 Certification:  12A Director:  Wes Anderson Cast:  Bob Balaban, Adrien Brody, Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston, Willem Dafoe, Hope Davis, Grace Edwards, Rupert Friend, Jeff Goldblum, Tom Hanks, Maya Hawke, Scarlett Johansson, Edward Norton, Stephen Park, Tony Revolori, Margot Robbie, Jake Ryan, Liev Schreiber, Jason Schwartzman, Tilda Swinton, Jeffrey Wright Rating:   75 % Review: Wes' most visually striking film to date. He has became renowned for his eccentric, quirky style that has taken over the internet in recent months. At the height of his popularity, Wes released perhaps his least accessible film to date - it's not got to win anyone over but fans of his work will thoroughly enjoy Asteroid City . Exceptionally lit monotone shots detailing the production of the play combined with the glorified vibrancy of the play itself. The sets are designed with perfection in mind. Costume designs fit the aesthetic.  Neon greens, vast blu...

Elvis

Image
UK Release Date: 24 June 2022 Certification: 12A Director: Baz Luhrmann Cast: Austin Butler, Olivia DeJonge, Tom Hanks, Kevin Harrison Jr, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Dacre Montgomery, Richard Roxburgh, Helen Thomson Rating: 70% Thank you, thank you very much.  Review: Elvis is the latest in line of biopics regarding famous rock and roll stars - Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman - and it entertains but could be seen as a disappointment due to its failure to live up to its clear Oscar winning potential.  Austin Butler's performance is magically spectacular. He had to beat out the likes of Ansel Elgort, Harry Styles and Miles Teller in order to get the role. He embodies 'The King' that was Elvis Presley. He moves like Elvis, sounds like Elvis and even shares the same mannerisms as Elvis. Butler just plays every single scene to perfection. This is definitely his route into the Hollywood limelight. Tom Hanks is just as good as Colonel Tom Parker, even with a...

News of the World

Image
UK Release Date:   10 February 2021 Certification:   12A Director:  Paul Greengrass Cast:  Michael Angelo Covino, Fred Hechinger, Tom Hanks, Elizabeth Marvel, Ray McKinnon, Thomas Francis Murphy, Helena Zengal Rating: 85 % I'm backing News of the World at the Oscars. Review: Tom Hanks - does the man have a bad movie? He's so incredible in every single movie he's in, I don't understand how he's only won two oscars. In News of the World he plays a tired civil war veteran trying to return a young child back to her home. He's able to express everyone one of his emotions to the audience making me cry a little as most of his movies do.  Hanks is getting on a bit in real life but I thought it was his most action heavy movie since Saving Private Ryan and Road to Perdition  showing he still has that side to his acting repertoire.  I thought Hanks' co-star, to me an unknown 12-year-old German actress, Helena Zengel was superb.  It's not just me...

A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood

Image
UK Release Date: 31 January 2020 Certification: PG Director: Marielle Heller Cast: Eric Colantoni, Chris Cooper, Tom Hanks, Maryann Plunkett, Matthew Rhys, Susan Kelechi Watson Rating:   82 % We could all use a little kindness. Review:  A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood is a delightful movie centred on the beloved child entertainer, the late Mister Rogers - a fond icon of many an American's childhood. Even though he hosted a children's show, the movie covers some mature themes like depression and the self-control of our emotions. The themes are particularly relevant in today's society where mental well-being is such an important issue. Tom Hanks superbly personifies Mister Rogers. Throughout  A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood the character is extremely caring, interested and kind, backing up my opinion that Tom Hanks is the greatest man to ever walk the Earth. Chris Cooper and Matthew Rhys are also excellent in supporting roles, perfectly portrayin...

The Ladykillers

Image
UK Release Date: 25 June 2004 Certification: 15 Director: Ethan Coen, Joel Coen Cast: Irma P. Hall, Tom Hanks, Ryan Hurst, Tzi Ma, J.K. Simmons, Marlon Wayans Rating: 63 % The Ladykillers is the first Coen brothers movie I have seen. I'd like to see more. Review: The Coen brothers' The Ladykillers is a dark comedy based on the 1955 Ealing comedy starring Sir Alec Guinness and Peter Sellers. The modern adaptation sees Tom Hanks cast in the lead role, and of course he delivers a masterful performance. The well written dialogue allowed Hanks to chew up the scenery with many notable lines, and many unintelligible, to impress the audience with.  However in my opinion the best and funniest character is Gaiwan MacSam terrifically played by Marlon Wayans. The character's style of humour is brilliant, if a wee bit adult and pushes the movie's 15 certification as far as possible. I also thought that J.K. Simmons' character, Garth Pancake, was funny and enjoy...

Sleepless in Seattle

Image
UK Release Date: 24 September 1993 Certification: PG Director: Nora Ephron Cast: Tom Hanks, Ross Malinger, Bill Pullman, Meg Ryan Rating: 47 % "Men never get this movie." Review:  As I have said multiple times Tom Hanks is my favourite actor. Even if he is cast as an underwhelming character in a weak movie, he shines. And the role of Sam Baldwin in Sleepless in Seattle is exactly that. I did like t he scene where Sam starts shouting at his son, Jonah. Perhaps one of Hanks' most comedic scenes. The child actor Ross Malinger is another standout in Sleepless in Seattle . For a nine-year old his character Jonah is equally charming and sarcastic.  On the other hand Bill Pullman and Meg Ryan were poor. Bill Pullman's character's laugh went right through me - it was so annoying. I didn't like Meg Ryan's character, Annie Reed, because I didn't warm to her. After all, she betrayed her fiancée for a stranger's voice on the radio. However I ...

Road To Perdition

Image
UK Release Date: 27 September 2002 Certification: 15 Director: Sam Mendes Cast: Liam Aiken, Dylan Baker, Daniel Craig, Tom Hanks, Tyler Hoechlin, Jude Law, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Paul Newman Rating: 84% A state of spiritual ruin. Review: It is fair to say that Road To Perdition wasn't on my radar until I heard about it on a podcast. I am glad I did. The cast in Road To Perdition is excellent. Tom Hanks is brilliant as ever. I felt that having Tom Hanks play a gangster ( Michael Sullivan) was a masterstroke and a unique role in the Hank's movies I have seen. The casting really worked for me. The up and coming (at the time) Daniel Craig and Jude Law both portrayed creepy, sinister and unnerving characters. Both characters are the type of people you love to hate,  whenever something bad happens to them you have to smile a little. And veteran actor Paul Newman delivers a brilliant performance as John Rooney, a conflicted but compelling character in an impossible p...

Toy Story 4

Image
UK Release Date: 21 June 2019 Certification: U Director: Josh Cooley Cast: Tim Allen, Tony Hale, Tom Hanks, Christina Hendricks, Keegan-Michael Key, Madeleine McGraw, Jordan Peele, Annie Potts, Keanu Reeves Rating: 83% "You can't teach this toy new tricks." R eview: Originally I didn't intend to watch Toy Story 4 in the cinema but it was my friend's birthday so I went to see it with him. I am glad I did! Toy Story 4 is my second favourite movie of the year so far. The cast is brilliant, it is emotionally satisfying and is an entertaining continuation of the 'toy's story'. The one aspect of this movie that annoyed me was the limited screen time of old favourites like Jessie and Rex. Even Buzz Lightyear only enters the story half-way through the movie and doesn't really contribute anything of importance.  However t he new cast and characters are amazing. Old favourites like Woody and Buzz are still interesting and funny, and th...

Catch Me If You Can

Image
UK Release Date: 31 January 2003 Certification: 12A Director: Steven Spielberg  Cast: Amy Adams, Nathalie Baye, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks, Martin Sheen, Christopher Walken Rating: 77% " Two little mice fell in a bucket of cream... " Review: I was unaware of the true events that inspired Ca tch Me If You Can , I thought it was a just another crime movie. I was pleasantly surprised w atching the story of Frank Abagnale Jr unfold. It was really interesting and I enjoyed the Dr. Connors plotline the most, particularly the "Do you concur?" scene.  As you may already be aware T om Hanks is my favourite actor. I found his portrayal of Carl Hanratty lacklustre and I didn't enjoy his performance on this occasion. On the other hand Leonardo Caprio in the lead role of Frank Abagnale Jr i s phenomenal and outshone Tom Hanks. In addition, Christopher Walken and Amy Adams are great in supporting roles. Christopher Walken received an Oscar nomination for Best S...
