Review:
Originally I didn't intend to watch Toy Story 4 in the cinema but it was my friend's birthday so I went to see it with him. I am glad I did! Toy Story 4 is my second favourite movie of the year so far. The cast is brilliant, it is emotionally satisfying and is an entertaining continuation of the 'toy's story'.
The one aspect of this movie that annoyed me was the limited screen time of old favourites like Jessie and Rex. Even Buzz Lightyear only enters the story half-way through the movie and doesn't really contribute anything of importance.
However the new cast and characters are amazing. Old favourites like Woody and Buzz are still interesting and funny, and the returning Bo Peep becomes another compelling female action hero. But it is the new characters that steal the show. Tony Hale as Forky is by far the best and funniest character in this movie. Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele's chemistry is electric (as Ducky and Bunny respectively) and their running gag 'Plush Rush' made the whole cinema laugh on more than one occasion. Christina Hendricks as the conflicted Gabby Gabby is a believable villain that breaks your heart. And who would have thought Keanu Reeves could have been so hilarious as Duke Kaboom - this was the first comedic role I have seen the actor in.
On one level Toy Story 4 is a simple comedy. Every character has at least one quip or joke and none of them felt forced or fell flat. But like so many other well crafted Pixar movies Toy Story 4 is heart wrenching. I believe if an animated movie can make a teenager who is sitting alongside his friends cry, then it must be a strong, emotive movie.
Some people were sceptical about Disney's motives for releasing Toy Story 4. Why was this movie was necessary? I wasn’t one of them and I have to say after watching this movie I would be up for more Toy Story movies.
I do agree with the consensus online that Toy Story 4 would have been better if it was called 'Woody' as it was mainly his story, but I still loved this movie and would recommend it to all ages.
