I'm backing News of the World at the Oscars.

Review:
Tom Hanks - does the man have a bad movie? He's so incredible in every single movie he's in, I don't understand how he's only won two oscars. In News of the World he plays a tired civil war veteran trying to return a young child back to her home. He's able to express everyone one of his emotions to the audience making me cry a little as most of his movies do. Hanks is getting on a bit in real life but I thought it was his most action heavy movie since Saving Private Ryan and Road to Perdition showing he still has that side to his acting repertoire.

I thought Hanks' co-star, to me an unknown 12-year-old German actress, Helena Zengel was superb. It's not just me that believes that as she has been nominated for a Golden Globe for her role and is also predicted to be nominated for an Oscar when the awards ceremony takes place on the 25th of April. At such a young age to be that talented is an extraordinary feat.

I've heard reviews about News of the World saying it's too slow but it isn't, it just doesn't really have a plot. It's a beautiful story from Paul Greengrass that is more of a character exploration and journey.

News of the World's cinematography is excellent as well as it's costume design making it one of the most visually stunning movies I've seen in a while. With some beautiful shots of the sunset and an incredible action scene on a ridge.

The only slight complaint I have with the movie is that it maybe drags on a little and could have lost five or so minutes with edits in post-production.

I'm not a huge fan of westerns but News of the World is such a refreshing movie that hasn't been done to this extent - the only movie I can really compare it to is one of my favourite superhero movies Logan. I'd have to say it's probably in my top ten Tom Hanks movies - great movie.

Comments

  1. 'News of the World' reminded me a little of John Ford's 1956 seminal western, 'The Searchers.' Regarded by some as the finest western, there is even a nod in the cinematography to the iconic silhouette still of Ethan Edwards (John Wayne) standing in the doorway.

  2. If you want to watch a good quality western then you should check out High Noon (1952), Shane (1953), The Searchers (1956), The Gunfight at the OK Corral (1957), Rio Bravo (1959), The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), The Sons of Katie Elder (1965), The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (1966), The Wild Bunch (1969), Unforgiven (1992), True Grit (2010) and my own personal favourite, Sergio Leone's epic Once Upon A Time In The West (1968).
