Review:
Based on one of the greatest comic book's of all time, Captain America: Civil War is the finale to my favourite trilogy. The Russo's do a great job at merging characters from solo ventures. Of course the parallels are there between the DCEU's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (which I enjoy a lot more than most) and Captain America: Civil War but the latter did a great job at creating a story that would shape their universe for years to come.
A lot of reviews at the time of the movie's release stated the movie was pretentious and simply an unofficial 'Avengers 2.5.' However Captain America; Civil War is still Steve's story, it's about his and Tony's opposing views on how they should be treated. The movie is so effective at telling this story that by the end of the movie my mum - who hasn't even seen every movie in the Infinity Saga - is begging the pair to stop beating each other to death showing how easy it is to get connected to these characters.
Most of the cast had already appeared in the MCU all doing a stellar job in their roles. However, the three new introductions stand out to me - Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther, Daniel Brühl as Zemo and Tom Holland as Spider-Man. Chadwick Boseman is perfect as the Wakandan king and should never be replaced in the role due to his incredible performances despite his tragic passing. Daniel Brühl makes for an interesting villian that knows he is outmatched physically by our heroes but not mentally. And, the breakout star who has since boomed into Hollywood, Tom Holland is the perfect Spider-Man as he plays with such charisma.
Perhaps my favourite ever action set-piece, only rivalled by Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Endgame, the airport scene is any fanboy's dream. Seeing my favourite heroes pitted against each other where everybody gets their own moment to shine. I also enjoyed the final battle as it lifted an iconic shot straight from the pages of the comics.
The only slight issues I have to the movie is that Steve does kiss his niece (which is a bit weird) but ultimately it's just a continuity error. I do feel there should have been heavier consequences to our heroes' actions. In the comics, War Machine died during the events so I feel his paralysation was a bit of a cop-out, losing emotional depth.
However, I absolutely love Captain America: Civil War and how it superbly sets-up Spider-Man: Homecoming, Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War. Another excellent addition to the MCU, one of my favourites.
