Review:
Jim Carrey made his name for his larger than life comedic roles, but in The Truman Show, where he plays Truman Burbank, we see a more subtle performance. His comedic timing remains incredible but he also shows a great deal of emotion and this works just as well. Jim Carrey's performance is the best performance in the movie... apart from Terry Camilleri's.
I don't care that I don't know who he is. I don't care that his character didn't even have a name. Terry Camilleri as Man in Bathtub is one of the best comedic performances I have ever seen. The manner in which he reacts to Truman's predicaments is hilarious.
The concept of The Truman Show is excellent and novel for it's time. Released in 1998 but set in 1995, the world is tired of seeing actors giving fake performances. Television producer, Christof (played by Ed Harris) capitalises on this, by taking an abandoned baby, Truman Burbank and televising his whole life live, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year. The idea that the entire city was a giant studio set and that everyone in the city was an actor was executed extremely well.
One aspect of The Truman Show that I didn't enjoy is when Christof is interviewed. It is pure exposition and I feel Director Peter Weir could have handled this better. The movie ends on a cliff-hanger and I feel that The Truman Show could have been 15 minutes longer.
Because the movie ends on a cliff-hanger I would love to see a sequel or a reboot of The Truman Show. What is Truman up to now, 25 years later?

Don’t you think this movie still has some relevance in this current world of Trump, reality TV and fake news? What is frightening is that the idea of controlling a life like that is really happening. That documentary about the American triplets who were separated at birth was like a real life Truman Show.
ReplyDeleteIt is still very relevant, yes.
