Review:
X-Men: Dark Phoenix is the latest and last instalment in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise. It isn’t quite the finale that some fans were hoping for, but it is not as bad as some of the reviews out there and is better than a few of the previous X-Men movies. I have already ranked the 20th Century Fox X-Men movies.
The aspect of X-Men: Dark Phoenix that I disliked most was the alien plot line. The aliens are generic and their motives are not explained in enough detail. Even a talented actor like Jessica Chastain couldn’t make the aliens interesting in any way.
On the flip-side, the best thing about X-Men: Dark Phoenix is the acting. Michael Fassbender, Sophie Turner and Nicholas Hoult are excellent in their roles once again. Although I felt Jennifer Lawrence and James McAvoy were not at the same level. James McAvoy performance was surprisingly disappointing, portraying a dislikeable and egotistical Charles Xavier.
[Spoiler] The death of Mystique was handled particularly poorly. Now I do not like Jennifer Lawrence in the role of Mystique and by this point she had given up on the franchise. But her death was lame, impaled on some wood - what a satisfying end. It reminded me of Logan’s end in Logan but his death, and the emotional ramifications was handled well as it had been built up throughout the movie. Mystique’s death, not so much. The movie's trailer virtually gave away the storyline.
The third act is a spectacle to be behold. Every mutant has a moment to shine but Magneto steals the show. And the train setting was a brilliant idea.
Simon Kinberg’s directorial debut had heavy reshoots and you can tell. X-Men: Dark Phoenix was lacklustre and I would only recommend you see it if you love the X-Men franchise.
