They made me what I am: a son of the land, a king of the seas. |
In Aquaman, director James Wan has successfully created a world unlike any other. The visual spectacle of the underwater city, with the multitude of colours took my breathe away from the first moment I saw Atlantis. The enormous scale of Atlantis is impressive but the director skilfully uses CGI to illustrate the fine detail; for example, the cargo-bearing turtles and whales and the design of the Atlantean's ships, which all look like marine animals.
I was a little sceptical ahead of Aquaman as James Wan made his name directing horror movies such as Annabelle, Saw and The Conjuring. I was worried that Aquaman would be too dark, but this is by far the funniest movie in the DC Extended Universe. Aquaman made me laugh the whole way through. James Wan hasn't tried to make a serious movie, in the mould of The Dark Knight, he has instead made a movie that is entertaining for fans and critics alike.
I think we can all can agree that in the original DC comics Aquaman is by no means the coolest character. In fact he's pretty lame. With his Trump-esque golden mane, yellow body armour, black Speedo's and green tights his appearance is somewhat unique. He rides on the back of a dolphin and even talks to fish! However, I am pleased that this movie embraces the weirdness. Jason Momoa's excellent portrayal of a believable, yet goofy, character is compelling.
My major criticism of Aquaman is that the movie is 15 minutes too long. At the end of the movie there is a huge CGI battle scene reminiscent of Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King or Avengers: Infinity War that I felt wasn't necessary.
Interesting review Mackenzie - would you say that a lot of movies based on comic books go overboard on the battle scenes?
ReplyDeleteNot really some make me smile, laugh and cry but yes some do go overboard. It depends.
