A movie that's whole purpose is to put a smile on your face.

Review:

DCEU's Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn is a fun, colourful action movie with some superb performances.

Margot Robbie is irreplaceable as Harley Quinn. She plays every side of the character so well from her psychotic tendencies to the drastic range of her emotions. Margot Robbie is also incredibly charismatic in the role and does the majority of the stunts by herself. Ewan McGregor is one of my favourite actors and he really gets a chance to shine as the mad man villain, Black Mask showing his incredible acting range. The supporting cast are all nice additions especially Mary Elizabeth Winstead who fits the role of Huntress terrifically. Making me laugh whilst being so cool at the same time.

The action was very good in Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn. The director brought in the stunt choreographers from John Wick and it shows. The bank scene stands out as it perfectly compliments Harley’s character by making it as colourful and extravagant as possible even using cocaine to enhance her performance. It fitted the character perfectly.

I appreciated that the movie tried to distance themselves as much as possible from the rest of the DCEU.  Apart from a few coy mentions Cathy Yan chose to focus on Harley’s story. The costume design was also flawless especially for Harley Quinn whose outfit was colourful and vibrant feeling very similar to the character.

One complaint I do have is that the movie didn’t really explore the Birds of Prey enough, instead just choosing to set them up for another movie. For that reason I do believe the movie would’ve benefited more if it was just called Harley Quinn as it’s her story.

Overall, whilst it’s not perfect Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn is an enjoyable movie. I think another feature exploring more of Harley would be something I'd look forward to seeing.
