Review:
When I was younger I used to play Tomb Raider on my dad's playstation, so although I haven't seen the movie starring Angelina Jolie, I would consider myself a Tomb Raider fan. But this movie is the definition of lacklustre. I got ten seconds into the movie and I already wanted it to end. The whole point of Tomb Raider is that it's a simple action-adventure story similar to Raiders of the Lost Ark and immediately the movie decided to tell a story which deals with an ancient witch who can kill by touch alone. That feels so far-fetched to me and in my opinion that isn't Tomb Raider.
Alicia Vikander put in a lot of work to prepare for the role of Lara Croft. She went through moths of physical training in order to complete most of the stunt work by herself. And her performance is fine throughout the movie despite the fact her line delivery isn't always great and that she seems to moan a lot which was quite strange. I'm finally tired of seeing Walton Goggins play the same character again and again on screen, he's such a talented actor. He deserves more than a generic villain. I hope he'll be able to escape this type cast because he's simply not good in this movie. Also Dominic West essentially plays a crazy guy which is a huge waste of his skill.
Although, what annoyed me the most about the cast is Nick Frost. He's probably my favourite comedy actor of all time. If you're going to pay the money to have him in your movie why is he in it for 60 seconds and left uncredited. He provides the only genuine laughs of the movie and I don't understand why he wouldn't be made a supporting member in Tomb Raider.
Categorised as an action-adventure movie, the action in Tomb Raider is truly dire. Fight scenes are few and far between and poorly executed. The same shot of Lara jumping off a mode of transport with unnecessary slo-mo shots and that's lazy - there's no other way to put it.
Tomb Raider clearly sets up a sequel in it's final moments which to be brutally honest I don't want to be put through it. But is the studio has learnt anything from this terrible film, please just give me more Nick Frost.
