Review:
Elysium is one of the worst movies I've watched in the last year. To put it kindly, the movie is terrible. Genuinely the most appealing factor is that due to the cast members I really wanted to watch The Martian, The Dark Knight and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
The plot is so lazy and is just basic storytelling. More than 100 years in the future - the wealthy live on a space station whilst the poor still reside on Earth. It's an ok premise at best but the movie took way too long to set up the story leaving me bored by the time the action kicked in, which in all honestly was a huge CGI mess.
Matt Damon is one of my favourite actors, featuring in countless incredible movies, so it really frustrated me that the movie was terrible even though he did ok. In addition I really hated his suit or whatever it was, it felt unrealistic even for over one hundred years in the future. Diego Luna also did an ok job in my opinion. However negatively, Jodie Foster's performance was dreadful, it feels like she didn't actually spend any time on the movie and did all of her work in post production. William Fichtner's performance fell short which disappointed me as I know of his talent due to his cameo in The Dark Knight.
But by far the biggest problem with Elysium is that I wasn't invested into any of the characters at all. I should want the main villain, Kruger (played by Shartlo Copley) to fail but I didn't because he's literally a convicted rapist. So whenever he appears on screen, it puts a sour taste into my mouth especially the interactions he has with a little girl.
The movie has a similar concept to Oblivion but I do prefer the latter slightly. I would not recommend Elysium to anyone and I will definitely not be rewatching this ever again.
