Review:
I didn't know a lot about Gladiator and wasn't expecting too much having endured Ridley Scott's 2008 lethargic remake of Robin Hood. But Gladiator is an excellent movie. It actually won five Oscars in 2001, including Best Picture and Best Actor.

The action is incredible. The use of medieval weapons and the fact that the movie uses iconic venues like the Colosseum makes the action realistic and believable.

Joaquin Phoenix, who plays Commodus, appears to be auditioning for Joker 19 years before he landed the role. Phoenix delivers an extremely creepy but brilliant villain with no redeeming qualities. The main actor Russel Crowe is also great in his role as Maximus, the gladiator who defied an empire. His character is likeable and his motives relatable which heightens the emotion at the story's conclusion. Phoenix and Crowe deliver standout performances aided by an excellent supporting cast including Spencer Treat Clark, Djimon Hounsou and Connie Nielson.

The score by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard is beautiful. I now believe that Gladiator has one of the best soundtracks of all time.

One slight problem that I had with Gladiator was that I wasn't invested in Richard Harris' character, Emperor Marcus Aurelius. I didn't believe that he loved Maximus more than he did his own son, Commodus.

There are rumours that Ridley Scott plans to make a sequel to this movie. I would love to see it as Gladiator turned out to be a great movie.
