Review:
The Lion King is one of my favourite animated movies of all time.

The animation, the music and the cast is brilliant. With one exception. Matthew Broderick feels off as Simba. I think the main character is unlikeable, but Matthew Broderick manages to make the character even more dislikeable through affected, off-putting dialogue and brash, impulsive actions. However this didn't spoil the movie for me too much because the rest of the characters are entertaining.

In particular, Jeremy Irons excels as Scar. Scar is manipulative, ruthless and vicious - he brought so much harm to the Pride Lands. I really enjoyed the supporting cast with actors like Rowan Atkinson, Robert Guillaume, Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella all becoming iconic characters as Zazu, Rafiki, Timon and Pumbaa respectively. Rafiki, the mandrill, is my favourite, I think he is really funny, he shares good wisdom and he reminds me of one of my friends. Apparently Rafiki was originally drawn as a cheetah.

[Spoiler] James Earl Jones is the only returning actor in this year's live action remake. In both, he plays Simba's dad, Mufasa. His death is heart-breaking.

The songs from The Lion King are all now Disney classics. 'Circle of Life' is my favourite because of the attention-grabbing, opening cry - Nants ingonyama! Whilst 'Be Prepared' is my least favourite. But Hans Zimmer’s score is equally beautiful and is highly underrated. The score was mixed with African Tribe music and Zulu chants.

The animation was ground breaking at the time. The stunning African landscape is so realistic. Disney used their ‘A team’ to animate Pocahontas whilst their ‘B team’ was left to animate The Lion King. Today, The Lion King is held as the more successful of the two, both commercially and critically.

The opening of The Lion King is incredible. I really enjoyed the fact that the audience is immediately immersed in the story.

I love this movie and I can't wait to see what Jon Favreau can do with the live action remake.
