Review:
I cannot review Spider-Man: Far From Home without giving away major spoilers. Please bare this in mind if you haven't seen the movie.
[Spoiler] Jake Gyllenhaal is perfectly cast as Mysterio. All comic book fans will know that Mysterio is one of Spider-Man's main villains. There is an expositional scene in the bar that had the potential to ruin the movie but Jake Gyllenhaal nailed it.
The returning cast are once again excellent, especially Tom Holland, who in my opinion is the best actor to play Spider-Man on screen. And special mention to Jon Favreau, who gave his best performance as Happy Hogan.
The movie isn't set in Midtown Science and Technology School as Peter is on an European field trip (to Venice, Prague and London). I didn't mind that at all. It meant that the MCU could visit places it hadn't been before.
The humour was on point once again with most jokes coming from MCU call-backs which are some of the best aspects of the movie. And the running gag about the 'Peter Tingle' was particularly amusing.
One of the weaker elements of Spider-Man: Homecoming was the action, Spider-Man: Far From Home fixed that. The action was mind blowing. Mysterio’s illusions made Doctor Strange look like an amateur. And the third act was incredible, with so many great moments.
In some ways, Spider-Man: Far From Home is similar to Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 (2004). For example, Peter willing to give up his powers, an instrumental pep talk from a supporting character and MJ figuring out Spider-Man's true identity. I didn't enjoy that the movie rehashed these elements of Spider-Man 2. The plot didn't feel original at all, which bugged me.
The two post credit scenes are genuinely unmissable, both of them turn the MCU upside down. I enjoyed the first one more because of the return of J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson and the game changing reveal. In some ways both post credit scenes are more like another ending for the movie.
I enjoyed Spider-Man: Homecoming more than Spider-Man: Far From Home but I still loved the second instalment very much. I can't wait to see what will happen to Spider-Man in the future.
