MCU Phase Four Reaction
Late last week, Kevin Feige and some of the MCU cast members announced at San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) Phase Four of the MCU.
Feige also announced some other movies and some Disney Plus TV shows but I will purely concentrate on the Phase Four movies today.
Here is my reaction to what was announced.
Black Widow
Black Widow is slated for release in May 2020. It will be directed by Cate Shortland and will star David Harbour, Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh and Rachel Weisz. It will explore Black Widow's origins and her time in the much referenced Budapest.
Eternals
Chloe Zhao will direct Eternals which is set to be released in November 2020. Bryan Tyree Henry, Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden and Kumail Nanjiani will star and the movie promises to explore The Eternals and The Deviants and how both shaped Earth's history and civilisations.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Shang-Chi is known as the Master of Kung-Fu and the movie will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. Awkwafina, Tony Chiu-Wai Leung and Simu Liu will star. What interests me most about this movie is that the Mandarin will have a major role. No, not Ben Kingsley's lightweight Mandarin but the real Mandarin. This movie is slated for release in February of 2021.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Scott Derrickson will return to direct and Bennedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen will star. Scott Derrickson has described the movie as the first scary movie in the MCU which makes sense as the director has horror roots and that the main villain is Nightmare. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is pencilled in to be released in May 2021.
Thor: Love and Thunder
Finally, Taika Waititi will return to direct and star, alongside Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson and Natalie Portman. Yes, Natalie Portman is returning - who would believe that? And this time she will be playing the recent comic book run of Jane Foster Thor. Tessa Thompson also announced that Valkyrie is a LGBT character. November 2021 is the scheduled release date.
As you are aware I am a massive MCU fan and I'm looking forward to all the Phase Four movies. But here are my initial thoughts on which ones I'm most excited for:
05. Thor: Love and Thunder
04. Black Widow
03. Eternals
02. Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
01. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Yes, there is no Iron Man. Yes, there is no Cap. And yes, these movies are a risk but I think that the MCU is in safe hands with Kevin Feige.
