Review:
Following the disappointing Ant-Man and the Wasp [although I did like the original Ant-Man more than most people] Captain Marvel is a great return to form for the MCU. Marvel fans have had to wait eight months for the release of Captain Marvel.
Unlike other MCU movies Captain Marvel hasn't been getting too much hype. Whether it's because Avengers: Endgame comes out in six weeks (25 April 2019)? Or whether it's because Captain Marvel's lead character is a female superhero? Or whether it's because of Brie Larson's views about diversity in Hollywood. I think that's stupid and people should judge the movie as a great Marvel superhero movie because that's what it is.
Captain Marvel is set in the 1990's and the use of songs and cultural references are brilliant, especially when Vers lands in a Blockbuster video store. The 90's soundtrack hits all the right notes for anyone that grew up in the 90's and Brie Larson totally rocks the grunge look in flannel shirt and Nine Inch Nails T-shirt. At one point Talos puts a disc into a computer and Carol asks what is it doing? Nick Fury says it's loading. Remember Captain Marvel is set in the days before 4G.
Captain Marvel is by no means the worst movie in the MCU but isn't the best. It does have flaws. The CGI isn't great, apart from the de-aging of Nick Fury, but is much better than Black Panther's which was awful.
The mid credit scene is amazing and important for future storylines of the MCU. Captain Marvel made me incredibly excited for Avengers: Endgame and also for any other appearances that Captain Marvel makes in the MCU.

Captain Marvel is an origin story that doesn't follow the tried and tested Marvel formula. When the movie starts Brie Larson's character already has powers but hasn't unlocked their full potential and she has no memory of her past. The character keeps having flashbacks of her time on C-53 (Earth) and in order to remember her past must track down and find the people in her flashbacks.
The cast is incredible, with great performances from Samuel L Jackson, Brie Larson and Ben Mendelsohn. Nick Fury's inclusion in the story was a masterstroke by the directors of Captain Marvel. The de-aging on Samuel L Jackson is flawless (less so Clark Gregg) and the audience discovers how Nick Fury loses his left eye. At the start of the movie Ben Mendelsohn (Talos) is just another MCU villain but by the end of the movie the character development makes him one of the most interesting presences on screen. Brie Larson is brilliant in the role of Carol Danvers/Vers/Captain Marvel. She brings likeability, humour and energy to the role. And I just don't understand the hate for her and for this movie from some quarters. Perhaps the best character in the movie is Goose, a flerken (an alien that looks like a cat) who steals scenes and makes the audience laugh out loud.Captain Marvel is set in the 1990's and the use of songs and cultural references are brilliant, especially when Vers lands in a Blockbuster video store. Agreed. Captain Marvel is a strong movie in its own right, but it doesn’t half set the scene for Avengers: Endgame. Beyond excited.
