Review:
Darkest Hour depicts the first couple of months of Sir Winston Churchill's time as the Prime Minister. The movie was nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture [Darkest Hour won Best Actor and Best Makeup and Hairstyling].
Gary Oldman is absolutely incredible in Darkest Hour and thoroughly deserved his Oscar for his portrayal of a moody and unpredictable Churchill. But he is not alone - the supporting cast are on top form as well. Lily James plays Elizabeth Layton, Churchill's secretary. I thought she was one of the best characters in the movie and provided elements of humour in a very serious movie. Ben Mendelsohn is excellent, as usual, in his portrayal King George VI, always with a witty comeback to Sir Winston Churchill. Kristen Scott Thomas plays Churchill's wife, Clemmie. She brought an arrogant man down to Earth.
The story of Darkest Hour was very interesting to me. It centres on an under fire Prime Minister who isn't trusted by anyone in Parliament, faces challenges from other politicians who attempt to overthrow him, all at the same time as dealing with the horrors of the Second World War.
One reason Darkest Hour was so interesting to watch is that it reminded of what is happening in the UK right now. Brexit is not going well, to put it kindly, and when Churchill took over as Prime Minister the country was in turmoil and in the middle of the Second World War. The whole movie focuses whether or not Sir Winston Churchill should negotiate with Adolf Hitler or not. Just like the dilemma Theresa May is facing, whether to appease the EU, her own political party or the voting public. Eerily similar.
Darkest Hour wasn’t a complete story. The movie only showed us the first couple of months of Sir Winston Churchill’s time as Prime Minister. So if you didn't know the story of the Second World War, you would have little idea of the events unfolding. Also the movie ends very suddenly. Churchill gives the famous 'We shall fight on the beaches' speech and the movie abruptly ends. There was no obvious conclusion to Darkest Hour.
