Review:
In 2012 Avengers Assemble [Original title, The Avengers] was the biggest thing to come out of the comic book movie genre.

The storyline is basic but the main reason this movie works is because of what came before. The movie is enjoyable in it’s own right but watching the earlier solo character movies definitely make Avengers Assemble so much better. Avengers Assemble was the first team-up movie and the culmination of five different movies released over four years (four solo movies and a sequel). And no one would have expected that seven years later we would be in the Avengers: Endgame.

The six original Avengers are brilliantly cast and with the exception of Mark Ruffalo have by this point grown comfortable with their roles. They are joined by a great supporting cast. I liked everyone apart from Chris Evans as Captain America, but that’s not his fault - he has little to work with.

Captain America was by far the weakest part of this movie. His costume is rubbish [Agent Coulson should never have messed with it.] Captain America barely did anything to help save New York and was arguably weaker than super spies, Black Widow and Hawkeye. At this point he was my least favourite Avenger and thank goodness the Russo Brothers got involved. Captain America is now my favourite character in the MCU.

Avengers Assemble allows Tom Hiddleston to reprise the MCU's first great villain. Obviously, I am talking about the God of Mischief, Loki. Before Avengers Assemble every villain in the MCU was a one and done, but this changed with this movie. Loki was the first  MCU villain to appear in more than one movie and three movies later is a fan favourite. I think he is brilliant in every way. Completely misunderstood, you can understand his malevolent motives. He remains my favourite MCU villain.

The movie’s third act is an action movie and comic book movie fans dream. Roughly thirty minutes long, the action does not stop. Some people hate on this movie because the Chitauri army are just cannon fire for The Avengers but I do not think that is a problem. The third act of Avengers Assemble has some of the most iconic moments of the MCU's Phase One. The 360 degree assembling of The Avengers, Hulk nonchalantly punching Thor and Hulk using Loki as a rag doll. The third act is a nice tribute to all of the comic book fans that had been waiting for this movie since the first issue of The Avengers was released in 1963.

Since Avengers Assemble Marvel Studios have released three sequels to Avengers Assemble. The main villain in two of these movies is the Mad Titan, Thanos (played exceptionally by Josh Brolin) and Avengers Assemble was his on screen debut. Thanos appears in a mid-credit scene and was told by The Other, “To challenge them is to court death.” A pleasing nod to the Marvel comics storyline where Thanos’ motivations for the ‘Snap’ is to impress Mistress Death.

Comments

  1. Nick Fury assembles The Avengers, The Avengers engage with Loki and the Battle of New York, I’m sorry, but Avengers Assemble has to be the best movie in the MCU. Without doubt.
