"I am Iron Man"
Review:
Where it all began. Iron Man, the first movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, MCU, is a good one. A sound base for a whole new genre of movies - the superhero blockbuster.

Iron Man
doesn't have the pressure that other movies in the MCU do. The audience didn't know that it was going to part of a connected universe when it was released. And that is what makes the movie, for a lot of people, an enjoyable experience. But when the then revolutionary post-credit scene appeared the audience were shocked and Kevin Feige (President of Marvel Studios) created a marketing masterpiece. People realised The Incredible Hulk was coming out and it was part of the same universe. This is why I love Iron Man so much.

One of the reasons I believe Iron Man is a success is Robert Downey Jr. Before Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr's career had stalled. He had the talent but after multiple incidents of substance misuse was put in L.A. county jail for brief periods. Kevin Feige and Jon Favreau took a massive risk in casting Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark, but eleven years on, I couldn't imagine anyone else playing the iron-clad avenger. His chemistry with every member of the cast is incredible, particularly with Gwyneth Paltrow (who plays Pepper Potts, Tony's personal assistant).

Overall Iron Man is a great movie. But most movies have problems and in Iron Man's case it's no different. I don't like how Obidiah Stane goes full out moustache-twirling villain out of no where. Jon Favreau could have saved the reveal of Iron Monger for the second movie because Jeff Bridges' contract was for two movies, but in the true MCU fashion they killed him off. Also, there were a few scenes in this movie that aren't needed especially the scene with air stewardesses on the flight to Afghanistan, I felt really uncomfortable in that moment in time.

  1. Do you think the film industry has learned from Iron Man what works and what doesn’t?
